The Queen sends her ‘thoughts and prayers’ to the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth visits the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in Manchester

LONDON — Her Majesty The Queen delivered a statement on Thursday morning expressing her sympathy for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire and praising the firefighters who helped tackled the blaze.

In a short message, Britain’s monarch said that her “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims and their loved ones at this time, while acknowledging the efforts of members of the emergency services “who put their own lives at risk to save others.”

The Queen also said it is “heartening” to witness how the local community has rallied to provide support for the victims.

“It is also heartening to see the incredible generosity of community volunteers rallying to help those affected by this terrible event,” she said.

12 people have been confirmed dead after the fire, but authorities have warned that this number is likely to rise in the coming days. A further 69 were injured, with 18 in critical condition.

My thoughts and prayers are with those families who have lost loved ones in the Grenfell Tower fire and the many people who are still critically ill in hospital.

Prince Philip and I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of firefighters and other emergency services officers who put their own lives at risk to save others.

It is also heartening to see the incredible generosity of community volunteers rallying to help those affected by this terrible event.
