KUALA LUMPUR – A PAS leader said the Islamist party has not abandoned the possibility of re-establishing its political consensus with PKR in Selangor if federal Opposition parties keep power in the state in the 14th general election (GE14).
According to its Youth wing chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, the cooperation “can happen” if it benefits Islam, and the party is currently deliberating such a possibility.
“[We] don’t know what can happen. We will see [after the 14th general elections],” Khalil told Malay Mail Online’s sister publication ProjekMMO in an interview.
Khalil said the party’s political collaboration is flexible, but depended on circumstances that benefit its “Islamic agenda”.
“We PAS [will] see from time to time. PAS is a party with a clear stance when it comes consensus.
“We can cooperate with any political parties, what is important, is that it must benefit Islam,” said the son of party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Last month, PAS formally ended cooperation with PKR, with the Islamist party’s powerful Syura Council deciding this was necessary to defend its Islamic agenda.
In a statement, the Syura Council accused PKR of breaking the terms of its conditional cooperation with PAS. The two parties had retained a working relationship despite the demise of the Pakatan Rakyat pact.
Late last month, Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah gave his approval for the three PAS executive councillors to remain in the state government until the 14th general election, thus securing Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s mandate as mentri besar.
The Selangor Sultan said that the position of the three PAS executive councillors should remain in the interest of the people and to continue efforts the develop the country’s richest state.
